JavaScript is a scripting language which executes on the clients machine. This gives JavaScript an advantage in the way that a script can be ran either when the page loads or when a certain event occurs, for instant the clicking of a button or the pressing of a key. One drawback to the scripts executing on the client machine is that it is near impossible to interact with the server. To some sites this may not present itself as a problem, however if you want your site to be able to interact with databases or send emails, you must find a way of connecting to the server.
That's where AJAX comes in. AJAX is not actually a new scripting language, instead it is a new way to use existing standards including JavaScript, PHP, CSS and XML. AJAX allows JavaScript to connect with scripts written in a side-server language such as PHP.
